GARDENING GUIDE FOR FRUITS & VEGETABLES

To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.

Spring has sprung!  This time of year is bursting with beautiful blooms and an array of colorful flowers.  It's also the perfect opportunity to grab a pair of gardening gloves, a trowel, seeds or starts, and begin planting your very own garden!

New to gardening?  It's not as difficult as you might think.  Even if you live in an apartment or somewhere that doesn't have access to a large plot of soil, you can grow your very own mini-garden in pots or planter boxes.  As long as your little seedlings or starts have access to full sun during the day and are nurtured with water and good soil, you can grow your garden anywhere!

Our advice is to start small.  Visit your local nursery to purchase seeds or starts, and find out the best soil for the type of garden you're hoping to grow.  Once you're confident in your abilities, branch out and grow more things! Our favorite? A salsa garden. We could seriously live off salsa!  And what better way to feed that addiction than by growing tomatoes, peppers, and onions right outside the back door? No more last minute trips to the grocery store.  Combine that with learning how to properly preserve garden plants, then you really CAN enjoy these fruits and vegetables all year long!

Other gardening favorites of ours include raspberries and strawberries (some varieties of berries thrive in pots!) or peach and apple trees. Fruit trees require a little more work, but totally worth it if you have the time and space.  Smoothie, anyone?

Since Soulrise Tribe partners with many charities promoting garden education (like Summit Community Gardens and Big Green), it's no secret that gardening is something very dear to our hearts.  Not only does it provide us with the knowledge of how to grow and preserve our own food (and knowing where it comes from!), it also provides many health benefits. Even a short amount of time spent in the garden can help relieve stress, boost immunity, elevate mood, and stimulate the brain.  Gardening also fosters community, where family and friends are brought together over their shared love of food and trying new things.

Have we convinced you to plant a garden yet?  With plentiful resources out there, it's so easy to get started.  We promise, your health and Mother Nature will thank you. Now, please excuse us while we grab some chips and dive into another bowl of salsa!
